Coffee as a practice in mindfulness.

I couldn’t finish my cup of coffee this morning. (My friends are going “Is she feeling okay?”)

But I didn’t need to.

It struck me this morning as I was drinking my coffee that as I’ve been getting more sleep, more consistent sleep, I’ve been needing coffee less and less. However, I still want and reach for the beverage, mostly out of habit. But what if I changed the way I thought about it?

Novel concept, right? Hear me out.

Coffee in My Life

Coffee has always been a huge part of my life. My parents are both serial coffee drinkers, my father’s parents, my aunts, uncles, cousins – practically everyone in my family drinks it. Part of it is the caffeine benefit (even before all of the delicious research came out about it), but mostly it’s about the ritual.

Choose your brewer. Put the grounds in. Fresh water. Start it. Allow the smell to permeate your surroundings. Breathe in. Smile. Chat with your relatives, your family, your friends over cups of this indulgence. Connect. Love. Laugh.

The Best Ritual to Start My Day

Starting to see it? It hit me this morning that I use coffee as part of my ritual, and being aware of it is just a practice in mindfulness. Water, bone broth, coffee. Each of these drinks provides a different benefit to my health, and each gives me time to reflect, stretch, be conscious of my body, my mind, the sleep I got that night, and slowly, slowly, thinking about the day ahead.

Before the emails, before the writing (though it is an excellent morning practice), before having to take the world into account, you can take this time for yourself. Grab that cup of coffee or tea and sit with yourself for a few minutes. You can take the time to think about how you really want to tackle your day. How do you want to feel at the end of it. Accomplished? Satisfied? Dare I say it: Happy? Being able to sit and map out how you intend to take control of your day can work wonders.
Whatever your drink of choice, start using the ritual to be really conscious. Be present. Be aware.

Love the practice. Don’t rush.

Meet you there.
